The two prepositions 'for' and 'during' and the conjunction 'while' are very often used badly by my students. The important rule to remember is that: 'For' : answers the question 'How long?' 'During' is never followed by a number! Example: "I will be present during the meeting". ("I was at the meeting for one hour".) 'For' can often be omitted in a sentence. Example: "I stayed in New York 2 weeks (or for 2 weeks)". 'While' is always followed by a subject + verb. Now practice with the following exercise: |
'For', 'During' and 'While'
